Recycling mobiles

Recycling your old mobile phones with Each One Counts is one of the most positive things you can do! If it is a model that is listed as suitable for recycling, and it's in working order:

- You will be donating a worthwhile amount to the charity of your choice
- You will be helping the environment by ensuring that potentially dangerous materials are disposed of correctly, instead of ending up in a landfill site
- Perhaps best of all, you will be helping people in developing countries to create a better local economy and community!

Just listen to what Ruth Brewer, a Zambian teacher, has to say:

‘A few years ago when I was living in Serenje (a small rural town in Zambia) I got a phone installed. I was very excited about how I would be able to talk to friends in Lusaka and friends and family abroad. But it wasn't as simple as that. At least half the year my phone would not work...rainy season being a particularly 'dry' time for phone calls! Now I am married and live in Lusaka but can talk to my friends in Serenje any time. Why? They've got 'network'. Mobile phones mean I can communicate with my friends there, and with my husband's family who are dotted around the country, many in rural areas. The mobile network does not yet cover the whole country but it's always growing and it enables people in the villages to stay in touch with relatives in town in a way they never could before (there are no post offices even in villages!!). Mobile phones have literally revolutionized communication in Zambia in a way that landlines never could have, and in a way that could not be imagined in the UK’.

In other cases, refurbished mobiles are helping rural farmers. Instead of taking goods to market in the hope of getting a good price, they can use a mobile to check prices before they go, and pick the best time. Simple, isn't it? So your old mobile can raise funds for the charity of your choice, and the recycled mobile itself can transform lives for the better in developing countries.

So please dig out all those unused mobiles and put them to work in the most positive way possible – with Each One Counts!
